Yiqiu3D Photochromic PLA Filament 1.75mm UV Color Changing Blue Purple Red Moulding 3D Printer

Brand: Yiqiu3D · Prints that only look interesting indoors? This PLA carries photochromic pigment inside the strand, so a printed part holds its lighter indoor tone and shifts toward a deeper tone once it is out in the light - the same part reads as two states without a second spool, a filament change or a paint coat. For novelty, gift and display work that second state is the feature that sells, and it survives on the whole surface, flat and curved alike.

  • Three effect colourways are stocked and they all behave on the machine like plain PLA: Photochromic Red leads
  • the blue and magenta runs give a small effect range for a themed collection. The tone change is a pigment response inside the plastic
  • Effect parts still have to print clean: 1.75 mm round strand on a round spool

Quick Answer

How does the colour change work?

Photochromic pigment is compounded into the PLA strand, so a printed surface shifts tone when it is exposed to light and returns toward its indoor tone away from strong light. The change is a pigment response inside the plastic, not a surface coating and not a metal, glass or stone material. How far and how visibly it shifts depends on the light the part receives and on wall thickness, so a part in direct sun reads differently from the same part on a dim shelf.

Is it right for my project?

Best for: Suits hobbyist projects, children's toys and decorative pieces that print cleanly straight off the plate - available in 3 colours; lead colour PLA Photochromic Red. Not ideal for: Not suited to structural brackets; switch to PLA+ or PETG when the part carries load - available in 3 colours; lead colour PLA Photochromic Red.

Product highlights

4 reasons

Three effect colourways are stocked and they all behave on the machine like plain PLA: Photochromic Red leads, with Photochromic Blue and Photochromic Magenta beside it. The lead parts read as a light red indoors and deepen in daylight

the blue and magenta runs give a small effect range for a themed collection. The tone change is a pigment response inside the plastic, not a coating, so it is not wiped off by handling.

Effect parts still have to print clean: 1.75 mm round strand on a round spool, approx. 335 m per 1 kg net filament per spool, spool measuring 21 x 21 x 7 cm, wound in one continuous pattern. Each effect colour is extruded as its own run, so parts from one spool match each other. How far the tone shifts and how quickly it moves depend on how much light the part receives and on wall thickness, so lighting conditions, not a fixed figure, decide what a buyer sees.

Novelty runs are usually short and repeated, so the strand has to behave predictably. Nozzle window 190-220 C, no heated-bed setting required, standard PLA cooling and retraction, 1.75 mm path and a 0.4 mm nozzle on common FDM desktop machines. Keep the effect in mind at the design stage: thinner walls and open geometry give the light more surface to work on than a solid block.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the colour change work?
Photochromic pigment is compounded into the PLA strand, so a printed surface shifts tone when it is exposed to light and returns toward its indoor tone away from strong light. The change is a pigment response inside the plastic, not a surface coating and not a metal, glass or stone material. How far and how visibly it shifts depends on the light the part receives and on wall thickness, so a part in direct sun reads differently from the same part on a dim shelf.
Will it print on my printer?
Yes. It is a standard 1.75 mm PLA-profile filament and runs on common FDM desktop printers with a 0.4 mm nozzle - Bambu Lab-style, Creality Ender-style and comparable machines. No heated-bed temperature is published for this series, so keep the PLA bed setting your machine already uses. Confirm your filament path accepts 1.75 mm strand before ordering.
What print settings do you recommend?
Nozzle window 190-220 C. No heated-bed value is published; use your usual PLA bed setting. Moderate cooling and standard PLA retraction give clean edges on detailed parts. Stay inside the 190-220 C window: overheating the strand during a long print is what dulls a pigment effect. For the strongest visible change, print thinner walls over open geometry rather than thick solid blocks.
Which colours are in the range, and are they consistent between batches?
Three photochromic colourways are stocked: Photochromic Red as the lead option, alongside Photochromic Blue and Photochromic Magenta. Each effect colour is extruded as its own run from one colour batch, so a repeat order matches the swatch you approved. Because the visible tone depends on light and wall thickness, approve a printed sample in your own lighting before a bulk run rather than judging from the spool alone.
What are the typical applications?
Novelty and gift items, keychains and bag tags, promotional giveaways, kids' toys and classroom demonstration models, shop-window and counter displays, cosplay accessories and creative pieces where the surface is meant to respond to its surroundings. It is decorative-grade PLA - not for structural brackets under load, high-friction wear surfaces, hot-service parts or food contact, and not a substitute for UV-stabilised outdoor material.
How should the spool be stored?
Every spool is vacuum-sealed with a desiccant pack and boxed. Keep spools sealed until use, then store them closed with desiccant away from direct sun. Moisture spoils surface quality on effect filaments, so dry an open spool before a long batch. Store printed parts out of continuous direct sun if you want the indoor tone to stay the reference tone. RoHS documentation is available upon request.
